Synopsis: Superman & Son part 2 was written and drawn by Peter J Tomasi and Patrick Gleason, with inks by Mick Gray and opens with Clark (Superman) Smith and his  son Jon flying into the arctic. Superman tells his son that the League members from that night were there about him, not his son and he wants Jon’s help in helping a coast guard icebreaker sub. He saves the sub, in classic Superman style as Jon watches, but then a giant sea creature attacks. The beast becomes a threat to all there and Superman asks his son to heat vision the creature at a certain point, since there was some kind of control device on there. Jon is terrified, based on the events of the last issue, but he is told that his dad believes him and despite some singeing of his dad, Jon burns off the device and the two take a second to catch their breath as the innocent creature returns to the deep.

Jon confesses about what happened to Goldie the cat, but Clark is understanding. The real problem is that Jon is wearing a Superman teeshirt. For anyone else, that’s just a tee-shirt, but for someone with Kryptonian blood, they may have no choice, but to embrace the S and what it stands for. Clark worries for his son and his choices, like any father. They go home, but someone/something finds the blood spilled when the beast attacks and identifies it as belonging to the House of El.

Back on the farm, Kathy, the blond girl from the last issue talks with Jon whilst Lois treats the quite severe burns that Jon left on his dad. She talks about keeping Jon’s secret and it’s a nice moment, til Jon falls from the tree and gets himself a nice little concussion. The fact that he was invunerable the previous night and has a concussion today isn’t lost on the fiercely protective Clark, who decides to take Jon to the fortress to get some more Kryptonian answers. Already at the Fortress is the person looking at the blood earlier, revealed to be the Eradicator, here to save Kal-El. …

Notes: I liked this issue and it’s change of pace from the previous issue and the difference from the Action Comics run. Clark is definitely in ‘dad’ mode, trying to teach his son how and when to use powers, just as he was taught. The beast attack should have been the highlight of the issue, but Clark telling his son that he will have to embrace the S shield for himself and a teary Jon confessing his mistakes, that carried far more weight and delivered a punch. The scene between Lois and Clark was also well done, one parent freaking out, with the other taking a more measured approach is relatable and plausible, as is Clark’s treatment of Kathy’s grandfather, even though he’s only trying to help. The only minor quibble is that Lois’s face looks bit out of place compared to the rest of the art in places and I’m not thrilled to see the Eradicator back, but this comic and the last have earned them some goodwill and will keep me reading till we find out what the Eradicator is doing.

Rating: 4 out of 5

Fantastic issue, with action, emotion and a touch of humour. Am enjoying modern Superman comics for the first time in years.

Next Time: Tiara’s, bullets and Bracelets, it’s back to the beginning for Wonder Woman.
