Action Comics #958

Synopsis: Path of Doom part 2 was written by Dan Jurgens with art by Patrick Zircher and opens where the last one ended, with a three way battle between Superman, Lex Luthor is a Superman suit and Doomsday. Superman is aware of the power and savagery that Doomsday is capable of and wastes no time trying to get the fight away from any civilians. Watching all this on TV is Lois and Jon, who are terrified and confused in equal measure, both by Doomsday’s return and the appearance of Clark Kent, this isn’t the Clark Kent of the Nu52, because he’s dead and he isn’t the older Clark Kent, because that’ s Superman, so this is an extra layer of mystery. Watching all these events is the enigmatic Mr Oz.

AC2 AC3

The battle doesn’t go well, with Luthor’s grandstanding, Doomsday being smarter and lets be honest, Superman is a bit rusty. When Lex chips in, Superman is quite honestly glad of the help. Not that it’s doing much. Lois watches, hoping Superman will run, but deep down knowing he never would. Jon wants to go help, while ‘Clark Kent’ does nothing, saying he was never Superman.

AC4 AC5

Lex and Superman save a train, all the while Doomsday getting smarter and faster. Lex goes after Doomsday alone, whilst Superman is saving the train’s passengers and does as well as you would expect. All the while Mr Oz watches it all, waiting to make his move.

Notes: Not a lot of story here, bit of an extended fight scene and in that regard it does very well. Doomsday looks horrifying, Superman looks heroic and the hits keep on being taken. No matter what they do, they can’t even slow Doomsday down. The pace is frenetic, lurching from save to fight, from fight to save and Superman see’s that no matter his motives, Lex Luthor is saving lives. But none of that makes much of a difference and watching this  doubting Superman unsure of his enemies is a nice twist. The mystery of Clark Kent deepens and the tension is even more cranked up. This is the middle story, but I liked where it started and I like the look of where it’s heading.

Rating:    5 out of 5

The Best Superman has looked in years.
