Lets start with Action Comics 957

download AC1

Path of Doom part one was written by Dan Jurgens, with art by Patrick Zircher and opens with a hostage crisis in Metropolis, being carried out by armed and high-tech bad guys of the generic sort. Outside the perimeter is held by returning Special Crimes Unit (Or SCU) Captain Maggie Sawyer, who is busy telling local journalist Jimmy Olsen to keep back.

Inside the Geneticron facility being invaded, the hostage takers come face to face, with a family ‘S’ shield. There are red laser beams and someone it seems has saved the day, in this case Lex Luthor, in a very Superman looking suit of armour.

AC2AC3

Upstate of Metropolis, Clark Smith, his wife Lois and their son Jon are moving into a new house. Nothing too interesting perhaps, but Clark and Lois are from the pre-Flashpoint Earth, where Clark was Superman. They are keeping a low profile, until Jon sets the TV up, using his emerging super-speed. On the news is Lex Luthor, taking this Earth’s Superman’s place. Infuriated, Clark runs upstairs and using a piece of metal burns off the beard he had been growing and dresses in a spare costume. “Metropolis needs a real Superman.”.

AC4 AC5

In Metropolis, some of the gang who held the hostages at Geneticron, have escaped with a large metal container, while Lex floats over the crowd and tells them that they are all safe, that their Superman is here. Only to be upstaged by Superman. Lex is confused, but hides it, telling this newcomer that he can’t be Superman. Superman has no time for Luthor’s PR bull and tells him to take off the cape and shield, when Lex refuses, he tries to grab it and is shocked by electricity. Lex takes this advantage and opens fire with all he can and this descends into a street fight. The Daily Planet sends a reporter to look into it, someone with a familiar voice. Elsewhere, the thieves are struggling to get away with their metallic container, which is now starting to move around.

AC6 AC7

The reporter gets to the scene and is revealed to be…. Clark Kent? While the street fight gets into the air, the metal container opens and out jumps the last person either man calling himself Superman expected, Doomsday.

AC8 AC9

Notes: Finally we are getting somewhere. Dan Jurgens knows Superman, his supporting cast and villains and so it all feels so very familiar, but the art is there to remind you that this is a rebirth, a brand new day. It’s a perfect jump on point, far more than the Rebirth issue was. Here we see Lex doing his best to replace the man he hated so much as the perfect revenge against him. Or at least that’s what it looks like. Just seeing that leaves the in hiding Clark to get his own cape on and go public, without even a discussion with his wife, just a couple of hurried sentences before he goes and does what he wants to. He flies off after Lex and there isn’t even a discussion, it’s very “You’re the bad guy here.” kind of stuff. When Lex’s suit zaps him, he just belts Luthor. No thought, no judgement, just made his mind up and is going ahead. I liked that. This is a Superman with 10 years of dealing with Luthor behind him, he has a very clear idea of who Luthor is and that’s who he sees, is that the real guy? I don’t know, but Superman doesn’t either. One of the problems with Superman as a character, is that he’s seen as perfect, as almost godlike, but here, we see a flawed angry man with an axe to grind, rushing off and over reacting.

It’s great to see Maggie Sawyer back at the SCU and the whole supporting cast are good, with an interesting appearance by Clark Kent of all people. The dead version of Superman was outed as Clark Kent and the only other Clark Kent that there can be is punching Luthor, so who’s this guy? Then, as if enough isn’t going on, Doomsday is back.

Rating: 5 out of 5

This was a fun issue with characterisation, action and clean and enjoyable art. I am certainly going to carry on with this.

Next Time: The search for truth, in a bustier and mini skirt, yup back to Wonder Woman.
