Synopsis: Superman Rebirth was written by Peter J Tomasi and Patrick Gleason, with pencils by Doug Mahnke and inks by Jamie Mendoza and opens with a recap of the death of the Nu52 Superman. This issue is told from the point of view of the Pre-Flashpoint Superman, seen in the recent Lois & Clark series from DC (Which was awesome by the way) who has been living on the Nu52 Earth in secret for several years. He failed to save this other Superman, but is now determined to bring him back to life, after all, it was done for him.

While he is there, ruminating on all of this, Lana Lang is breaking into the fallen Superman’s tomb, to return his body to be buried in Smallville, Kansas. This is a promise she made him, so he can be buried with his mum and dad. There is a tense conversation between the two of them, as the PreFlashpoint Superman tries to explain that death may not be the end for her Superman, after all it wasn’t for him, he tells her the tale of his battle and defeat with Doomsday, his ‘death’ and his triumphant return.

Lana decides to work with this new Superman and the two head for her Superman’s fortress of solitude. Here, the living Superman finds that the crystal regeneration matrix doesn’t exist on this Earth. This Superman is gone and there is nothing he can do about it. Crestfallen, he helps Lana take her Superman home to be buried with his family.

SR9 SR10

Superman returns to the fortress and along side the statues of his Kryptonian parents, he finds that other other Superman has created statues of Johnathan and Martha Kent, PreFlashpoint Superman carves one of the Nu52 Superman, to stand with the Kents as a tribute for this fallen hero.

His final words, “All that tomorrow needs … is Superman.”

Notes: For obvious reasons, I am not going to be too objective, this is MY Superman. The Superman who appeared after Crisis, killed by Doomsday and restored with a haircut that was NOT A MULLET! This was the Superman who got married, who brought Lex Luthor down when he became president and many other classic stories ion over 20 years of comics. When Flashpoint brought this to a close, I was somewhat disappointed, but the whole brand new start thing, appealed so I gave the Nu52 Superman a try.

There were good stories, others that weren’t so good, Grant Morrison did some fantastic work at the beginning, but the more I read, the more it looked like a Superman who I didn’t recognise, nor wanted to read about. Now I accept that there are many different ways to interpret Superman, but this wasn’t for me. I got out and had little axe to grind, DC weren’t producing comics I wanted to read and I wasn’t buying, it was all very amicable.

Then came Convergence and a hint of the older stories and characters, including the from Crisis to Crisis  Superman. I was happy with that, when it span off into the recent Lois & Clark series about his adventures as a secret hero and a family man even more so. When rumours started that this Superman would become the main Superman, lets just say, it’s where my recent interest in Rebirth has come from. I went into this, expecting something in particular.

This wasn’t it.

But that wasn’t a bad thing, this was the writers boxing off the dead Superman’s story, providing some fleshing out of the living Superman’s character and as an epilogue rather than the prologue that the other Rebirth comics have become. But I liked it, the art was serviceable rather than spectacular and the writing was ideal, Clark was calm and friendly, but made it very clear he was Superman. It felt like I was reading about someone very familiar, but in a very different set of circumstances.

Rating

5 out of 5

This was the best of the Rebirth comics, if not the most action packed and it’s left me very keen to get back into DC comics as a whole.

Next Time: July 2016, the first few issues have landed.
