Green-Arrow-Rebirth-1-1 GA1

Green Arrow Rebirth was written by Benjamin Percy with art by Otto Schmidt and opens with Oliver Queen in Seattle being himself and upsetting his date before taking a walk home. Passing a homeless mother and son, he hands over some money, the mother is abducted, once Ollie is off-panel. Later on, we learn that Ollie has been made aware of the high volume of missing homeless and he decides to get involved in secret life as street level hero/vigilante and ‘social justice warrior’ Green Arrow. He tries to foil the little boy’s abduction, only to come to blows with another street level hero doing the same thing, this time Dinah Lance: the Black Canary. Realising they are both on the same side of this and told that the boy needs to be somewhere safe, Ollie invites them both to his home. Whilst there, Canary gives Ollie grief about the hypocrisy of being a 1%er playboy by day and a social justice warrior by night. This is a dichotomy that Ollie himself is aware of.

GA2 GA3

GA4 GA5

The boy leads them back to the jungle, a place in the Seattle woods, occupied by a large homeless community. Ollie and Canary talk on this journey, comparing histories and outlooks, whilst again verbally sparring.  They find the boy’s father and learn that the people are being taken by a group called the Underground Men, who coincidentally are attacking to get more people.

GA6 GA7

There’s a brief battle, the heroes take a prisoner who isn’t cowed by Canary, but Ollie impresses upon him that very bad things will happen if he doesn’t tell them where the taken people are. He points them towards an auction underground, where these people are being sold. Incensed, the heroes break up the auction (although much of it is online) and free the mother from the start of the comic and Ollie vows to take these people down.

GA8 GA9

Later on, Ollie and Canary are at Ollie’s place and free of the stresses of the battle, begin to get along…

GA10

Notes: This was a bit light and fluffy, but it worked. Rather than the CW Arrow series, where it’s all po-faced and uber serious. This comic was fun. Ollie was a bit of a jack-ass and Dinah calls him on it. The Batman-esque elements work better here than in the past and the volatile chemistry between the leads is clear from the beginning. The writing moves the story along, at times a bit too quick, but the fight scenes are fun, the dialogue pops and there’s enough plot to see where the story can go. It’s a nice synthesis of the Neal Adams GA and the Mike Grell era, but with an added shot of fun. The dialogue about him being a hypocrite about his lifestyle, but really he only asked about his beard was laugh out loud funny.

Rating: 4 out of 5

It was fun and made me want to get the next one, best kind of issue 1.
