Synopsis: The Drowning was written by Dan Abnett with art by Scott Eaton, Oscar Jimenez and Mark Morales and opens with Aquaman going after an anti-airbreathers terrorist cell called the Deluge. This xenophobic group wants to use fusion bombs strapped to enslaved sea monsters (yup, that’s right) to swim into a US harbour and detonate. Although logistical and intelligence support is provided by Spindrift station (an embassy between Atlantis and the surface world as well as Aquaman’s current base of operations, currently run by Aquaman’s fiancee Mera) Aquaman goes in alone. He faces and defeats the Deluge, with determination and a lack of patience. Afterwards he pops over to a diner near his childhood home to have some chowder.

In between the action scenes, we get a look at how Aquaman is viewed around the world, or at least in the US. This issue is narrated by an unseen voice, speaking fairly and respectfully of Aquaman. We eventually learn that this is Black Manta. who once again declares (to an empty room it seems) his intent to kill Aquaman for the death of Black Manta’s father.

Notes: Deja Vu. That’s what I got reading this comic. Black Manta wants vengeance, Aquaman gets no respect, the only people who are less happy with Aquaman being king than his subjects is Aquaman himself. We have a younger and more interesting Mera and I’ll be completely honest, I felt that this was something of a remake of the Nu52 relaunch of Aquaman. Only, you know, not as good.

Dan Abnett is a great writer, Eaton, Jimenez and Morales are solid artists, but they are simply re-heating the last reboot’s dinner, the best chef’s can only do so much with that. If you’ve never read Aquaman before, this is good, but it’s a pale imitation of earlier work.

My Wife (the Mighty Rosie) had similar thoughts and as a result, it comes across as a mis-step. They could have changed direction, done something different, but we got this again.

Rating 3 out of 5 (barely)

I doubt I’ll be getting this series again.

Next time: In Brightest day in blackest ni….. Ok, just how many Green Lanterns does Earth need? Green Lanterns Rebirth.
