20.-Wonder-Woman-Rebirth-1WWpg4

Synopsis: Wonder Woman Rebirth was written by Greg Rucka, with pencils by Matthew Clark and Liam Sharp with Sean Parsons on inks and opens with with uncertainty. As hinted at in DC Universe Rebirth, Wonder Woman’s memory and history seem to be at odds. She is born from clay, or the daughter of Zeus. She was sure which it was. Now she isn’t. She’s full of this doubt and lack of clarity about the particulars of her own life.

She considers how she is viewed by the world, it is as varied as can be, many praise her, many more decry her. Is she an ambassador of peace? Or is she the Greek god of war. She breaks the helm of Ares, she shouldn’t be able to do this, things built by brother of Ares: Hephaestus, should be indestructible. She grabs her lariat, it’s golden power is to compel the truth from whomever it is around. She wraps it on her own arm to get the truth, her truth.

WWpg3 WWpg1

The truth she gets is, that she is Wonder Woman, she is Diana, princess of Themiscyra and she has been deceived.

WWpg8 WWpg9

None of her memories are reliable and she has been lied to, in anger she shatters the mirror in her room and is determined to get to the route of these problems.

WWpg7

She sheds her post Nu52 look and returns to a more ancient greek design and decides to go back to the beginning of her life and find out where she went wrong, where the lies started. She returns to Olympus.

WWpg6 WWpg5

She arrives and is battled by Hephaestus’ automatones, seemingly there to prevent her learning the truth. She defeats them and proclaims.

“Change the story as much as you like…whoever you are, you will not succeed. I will have the truth!

And that’s where we end this issue.

Notes: Well this got interesting.

During an earlier run, during an earlier continuity, Wonder Woman became the goddess of truth, we seem to be returning to that idea, that not war, not peace, but Truth is her corner stone. The issues with her messed up and reimagined origin is treated as a story point and addressed really well by Rucka, who grabs the idea and holds on. This is a woman who wants to know what is going on, she will not stop till she knows. In a couple of dozen pages, Rucka gets me interested in the character and her quest. I don’t know what the truth is, I’m not sure I care, but I do want to see where this goes and how she gets, whatever she ends up getting.

The art is equally beautiful, Wonder Woman is idealised as she often is, but not the extent she has been, there is very much a leaning towards Gal Godot’s portrayal in both character and costume design (not accidental I’m assuming) and it works. Wonder Woman is magic in a high tech world, a woman on her own terms in a world that doesn’t deal with that sort of thing well and a woman in a mainly male dominated field. She should be given much more to do than we’ve seen. Maybe this is where that starts.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A decent start, am curious see where this is going, curious enough to get the next issue in any event.

Next Time: The Fastest Relaunch Alive.
